WhileJournal Club exists to enhanceRMCOEH trainees’ educationexperience, the center welcomesmembers of the public to attend, grab abite to eat, and join the discussion.

The aim of Journal Club ismulti-pronged. For one, it helps traineeshone oral presentation skills, which areessential in nearly all occupational andenvironmental health and safety jobs. The sessions also expose trainees to awide range of research, as well aspromote critical thinking regardingresearch — those who attend regularlyquickly learn, if they weren’t alreadyaware, that publication in an academicjournal does not guarantee that a study iswithout flaws.

The topics covered during the sessions vary widely, ranging from hearing loss in professional musicians to theside effects of microdosing psychedelic drugs. The group discussion is often lively, with trainees and facultyfrom multiple disciplines offering insight, asking questions, and engaging in polite debate.

The center encourages members of the public — especially occupational and environmental health and safetyprofessionals — to attend for two primary reasons: to spread knowledge regarding research and to providetrainees with the valuable perspectives of external professionals.
