Safety and Health Training

RMCOEH offers initial and refresher training in Asbestos Abatement. Our courses are intended to meet requirements established by EPA and other regulatory agencies, including the Utah Department of Air Quality (DAQ) and the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA).

We offer comprehensive initial and refresher courses in four key disciplines: Inspector, Management Planner, Project Designer, and Contractor/Supervisor.

• Inspector: Performs inspections in facilities, identifies suspect asbestos-containing materials (ACM), collects samples of ACM, and determines if the ACM is friable or non-friable. The initial course is 3 days and the refresher courses are 4 hours.
• Management Planner: Creates and updates school asbestos management plans per the EPA AHERA regulations. The initial course lasts two days, and the four-hour refresher courses are four hours long. Training as an asbestos inspector is required to become an asbestos management planner. 
• Project Designer: Creates project designs, work plans, or specifications for the removal or clean-up of asbestos. The initial course is three days, and the refresher courses are one day.
• Contractor/Supervisor: Supervises a team of workers or other contractors/supervisors during the removal of ACM. The initial course is five days, and the refresher courses are one day.

All individual asbestos certifications expire one year from the training course date. For example, if you attended an asbestos inspector course from April 13-15, 2020, your certification will expire on April 15, 2021. After April 15, 2021, you will no longer be allowed to perform asbestos inspections until you attend a refresher course and apply for recertification with the DAQ.

There is a one-year grace period for certifications. Considering the previous example, if your certification expires on April 15, 2021, you have until April 15, 2022, to take a refresher course (during that period, you cannot conduct inspections). After April 15, 2022, if you have not taken a refresher course, you must retake the initial course to be certified as an asbestos inspector.

A Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist (COHC) holds a unique position in the hearing conservation team. Under the supervision of an audiologist or physician, the COHC interacts closely with noise-exposed workers and manages the activities of audiometric testing programs

COHCs may be audiologists, physicians, occupational health nurses, industrial hygienists, human resources directors, workplace safety officers, or anyone interested in occupational hearing conservation.  COHCs may be responsible for performing pure tone air conduction audiometric testing, fitting hearing protection devices, providing education, and enforcing hearing conservation program (HCP) compliance. 

COHCs can work in a variety of settings. Some are based in fixed facilities like on-site industry clinics or occupational health clinics, while others travel and provide services through mobile hearing testing vans or trucks. There are also opportunities for COHCs in government agencies and military installations.

To become a COHC, a candidate must complete the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC)-approved, 20-hour certification course and pass the accompanying exam. There are no prerequisites for this course.

COHCs must renew their credentials every five years. RMCOEH offers both initial and refresher CAOHC-approved hearing Conservation Training. Please register early, as seating is limited.

EM 385 Competent Person Fall Protection Training is designed to equip government and military contractors and subcontractors with essential knowledge from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' EM 385-1-1 manual to ensure worker safety through the development and management of a fall safety program. By the end of this course students should be able to Identify and eliminate fall hazards in the workplace, demonstrate all necessary procedures relating to fall protection systems, calculate fall clearance requirements and understand USACE vs OSHA requirements and definitions among other course objectives.

EM 385 COMPETENT PERSON FALL PROTECTION TRAINING

In order to perform regulated lead-based paint (LBP) work activities in the state of Utah, it is crucial that you are a certified LBP individual working for a Utah-certified LBP firm. RMCOEH, as a Utah Department of Air Quality (DAQ) accredited training course provider, plays a vital role in helping individuals like you to be certified in LBP. Please note that our lead courses may not be recognized by States that administer their own Lead-Based Paint Program.  Check reciprocity laws before registering if work will be done outside of Utah.

Be advised that lead training is offered for open enrollment on a very limited basis. Please consider arranging for a contract course.

Our goal is to keep miners safe and healthy through our high-quality safety training programs. Federal law requires that all miners receive either 24-hour New Miner Surface training or 32-hour New Miner Underground training, and additional yearly 8-hour Annual Refresher training. Our approved MSHA training programs provide materials, guidance, and hands-on assistance to help miners and operators meet their training obligations and more.

Our web-based New Miner courses cover all aspects of the initial training requirements for owners and operators under 30 CFR Part 48 and satisfy the total MSHA requirement for new/inexperienced miner training. Participants will learn their rights and responsibilities, job-related safety procedures, rescue, and first aid techniques, as well as other safety and health hazards in the metal/non-metal industry. Students will receive a completed 5000-23 training certificate upon completion. This certificate will expire one year after completion. 

The web-based Annual Refresher courses cover all aspects of the annual training requirements for owners and operators under 30 CFR Part 48. Those who complete this course will return to the job with the skills necessary to perform their work under MSHA regulations, updates, and general best practices.

RMCOEH’s Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) course curriculums have been evaluated by NIOSH and meet the minimum requirements for spirometry training established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and NIOSH. NIOSH-approved spirometry training is a legal requirement under Federal Law for individuals conducting spirometry testing on workers exposed to cotton, coal, and silica dust.

This course is available to occupational health nurses and physicians, safety professionals, health technicians, and other personnel involved in performing and interpreting pulmonary function testing.

This course will explore the fundamentals of developing a site health and safety plan that includes provisions for biological safety. Course participants will be introduced to definitions, critical components, engineering controls, PPE used to eliminate site hazards and exposures, the economics of an effective site health and safety plan, and specific applicants where the site health and safety plan effectively included biological safety, as demonstrated through clinical and/or medical device case studies.
