Impacts of Hypertension on Truck Safety

Dr. Kurt Hegmann, Dr. Matthew Thiese

Occupational Injury Prevention, Occupational Medicine

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is responsible for the U.S. trucking industry, including its safety. This study is a systematic review and will likely include metanalysis(es) to evaluate the impacts of hypertension (high blood pressure) on truck driver safety. Impacts to evaluate include identification of blood pressures likely to impair safe driving, what are optimal medical practices associated with driving certification and hypertension, crash likelihood among those with hypertension versus those without it, and what are recommended physical standards for the certification of drivers.
