Melissa Cheng, MD, MOH
My role at RMCOEH is strongly influenced by my passion for addiction medicine. In my 10 years with RMCOEH I have been a course director for several classes with the MOH program, and I am currently an Associate Professor and the Medical Director of the UU occupational medicine clinics. In 2015 I included SBIRT (screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment for substance use disorder) training for all residents, and in 2021 I started the addiction medicine clinical rotation. I am also involved with state legislation, and in 2017 I helped pass H.B. 175 in the Utah Legislature, which mandated SBIRT training for current health care providers with a DEA license and ensured Utah Medicaid reimbursed for SBIRT codes. Furthermore, I am a member of the Utah Coalition for Opioid Overdose and Prevention (UC-OOP) where in 2019 I received the Utah Department of Health - Health Improvement Plan Award for Innovation for my Provider Training and Patient Education Committee.
